Absolute Supercars – Coming Soon to PSN (seriously!)

Value for money. That’s a phrase you hear a lot these days in a less-than-stellar world economy. On one hand, you had Honda pulling out of Formula One, citing “widespread uncertainties in economies around the globe.” On the flip side, you may be inclined to spring for a couple items off the dollar menu at your favorite fast food place as opposed to getting that big burger and fries combo. Hell, you might even be staying at home making a sandwich for yourself because you’ve eschewed the expensive habit of eating out.

That’s why Absolute Supercars‘ timing couldn’t be any better. If you’re sipping aged scotch in front of your D-Box motion simulator, then okay, maybe this $10 PSN-exclusive realistic racer isn’t for you. But for the rest of us penny pinchers who just want to race, this is a great deal.

Absolute Supercars runs on the engine from Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli so if you’ve played that, you know roughly what to expect in terms of physics, graphics, and of course the best selection of Ferrari road cars in any game. Absolute Supercars is not just about Ferrari’s though—supercars and race cars from Aston Martin, Pagani, and Mercedes are featured, just to name a few.

Game progression contains the driving force (pun intended) that you would expect: you immediately start off in amazing supercars (as opposed to sub-100bhp econoboxes) and progress through different countries as you unlock more tracks and earn the cash to buy more cars. This game easily brings enough content to satisfy your $9.99. Would you rather have a greasy meal at a diner, or hours upon hours of driving supercars from your couch? I thought so.

As I alluded to earlier, if you’re a PC sim racing elitist with a fancy wheel hooked up to your awesome rig, then Absolute Supercars is probably not the game for you. But if you want to sit your butt on the couch with a joypad and enjoy some cheap supercar fun, then this title will be spectacular fun for the whole family. And if you don’t have a family, don’t worry about that either–you can race with a field of up to 15 other (16 total) human drivers!

The only question now is: when will you be able to play it? I can report that the game is 100% completed; it was scheduled to be released on PSN in December 2011, and I played the full version just a few weeks ago. Right now the hold-up is on Sony’s end, with all the business needed to successfully get a game to appear on the Playstation Network. It’s definitely coming, but no one is quite sure when…maybe if you start scouring under couch cushions and car seats now, you’ll have enough change to buy the game when it comes out. Ooh, I just found a penny under my desk! Only 998 to go…
