WipEout has been with Sony ever since the console-maker’s first outing in back in 1995. The futuristic series is returning to its roots in WipEout 2048, depicting how the world of anti-gravity racing first came to be. The above video illustrates Studio Liverpool’s ideas on how the vehicles themselves evolved over time.
The transformations all happen very fast in the trailer, but the developers seem to consider the current standard of racing to be Formula One cars, before fast-forwarding to a future where cars can first ride on walls. In another video posted below, game director Graeme Ankers and art director Lee Carus share this middle step of evolved racing to be the year 2025. Two decades later, 2048 brings the birth of anti-gravity.
Can we get to this future in 30 years? Who knows, but if this research video is to be believed, quantum levitation is not that far off after all.
