Wipeout Futuristic Racing, Quantum Levitation Realized

John Polson January 5, 2012

Researchers at the Japan Institute of Science and Technology admitted to their Wipeout racing inspiration while creating this miniature track shown above. If only I got this for Christmas growing up!

Liquid Nitrogen filled cars are controlled remotely on a course, built with a healthy chunk of science I won’t pretend to understand. Electrodes, magnetic fields, and superconductors all sound like the recipe for some futuristic racing to me, though.

The researchers hope this is a step in the direction to revolutionize motor transport, which means revolutionizing racing wouldn’t be too far from that point, either. The closest thing we’ll experience for now, however, is Wipeout 2048 when it hits the PlayStation Vita late next month.
