Outrun was one of those great Sega arcade racers from the 1980s that was scenic, thrilling and a pioneer of its time. Outrun is notable for its innovative hardware (including a moving cabinet), its offering the player a choice in both soundtrack and route.
need1D’s Ocean Drive Challenge offers Xbox users similar scenic racing with scaling, layered sprites — a technique that was popular with racers in the late ’80s. Here, “players race against the clock in a variety of exotic locales, accompanied by a looping background music track and the occasional driver comment.”
Ocean Drive Challenge is available now and priced at 80 Microsoft points ($1), which is a small price to pay for a nice slice of retro-goodness and nostalgia for those who remember the golden age of arcades. I’ve heard the trailer music a couple times, and while it’s not a copy of Outrun and the sound effects sometimes rough, it relaxes and energizes me just fine.
