Today our friends at Camshaft Software released a 2012 version of their “building a car” demonstration video. Their first video showing a start-to-finish build was released back in early August and since then, there have been numerous improvements and enhancements made to the interface. In the engine department, the options have gotten much more detailed, with added fuel types and delivery, various intake and exhaust configurations, and other details. A lot of the options that were previously simple sliders have been refined, such as “Resonance” and “Power/Emissions” turning into various other characteristics that affect those.
A big change is that the gearbox editor has been completely omitted, to be replaced in the future with a gearbox “store”. While it’s true that some companies do buy gearboxes from companies like ZF or Tremec, there are indeed companies across the range from Honda to Ferrari that engineer their own ‘boxes. Hopefully both features will be incorporated into the final product: you have the choice to engineer your own transmission, or buy a pre-made unit with the dimensions (and perhaps even ratios) intact. They claim in the video that designing a gearbox just isn’t fun, which is a somewhat strange thing to say about a game that offers three different post-catalytic converter resonator types.
The rest of the designer has progressed since then, but not as dramatically. The engine designer will be released before the car designer so that probably explains that. However, I am looking forward to seeing the progression. I love the detail, so for example, I’m hoping that sliders like “Suspension Stiffness” will be quantified in spring rates, with different types of dampers available: your normal hydraulic shocks (with and without external reservoir?), airbags, even magnetorheological. The exciting part is that we can see this game changing right before our eyes, so whatever you wish for just may come true
At the end of the video, there’s a “special announcement”. They keep it low-key, but here’s the news: Release Dates for the demo! For everyone has pre-ordered the engine designer demo, it will be released on April 8th, and be available as a public demo (for everyone) on April 22nd. Remember, if you pre-order the game, you not only get it early, but you also get more stuff. If you want to support this unique indie game, check out the official website.
